Kashmiri Song Lyrics
Kashmir has long inspired poets and musicians with its mystical beauty. From iconic poets like Lal Ded and Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani to soulful Sufiana music, the region’s unique blend of Persian, Sanskrit, and local influences explores themes of spirituality, love, and mysticism.
Despite this, there is surprisingly little literature available online on Kashmiri song lyrics and poetry, limiting access to the region's artistic legacy. The lack of translations and comprehensive resources leaves many beautiful poems and songs under appreciated and largely inaccessible.
Here is an attempt to capture some of the popular songs and their deep profound meaning (songs are listed below or you can download attached PDF file).
Translations are available for most songs, please provide comments if you observe discrepancies.

Antan su madan waar - Habba Khatoon
Habba Khatoon (c. 1554–1609) was the wife of Yusuf Shah Chak, the last independent king of Kashmir before Mughal conquest. When her husband was exiled, she spent the rest of her life composing songs of separation. Her firaaq was therefore not metaphorical, every poem she wrote was a real lament for a real beloved taken by real political force.
Bulbul firaaq wyon dyu gulan Antan su madan waar | The nightingale sings in separation from the flowers, but the master of the soul is he alone (the beloved) (Firaaq = Separation, the pain of being apart) (Wyon Gulan = Sang, cried out to/for the roses) |

Khumaar kya chus yemberzalan Harnan karaan shikaar Shikar chanei jungle alan Antan su madan waar | What is this intoxication that has surrounded, and the deer are hunting. The jungle is yours (the beloved's) to hunt, but the master of the soul is he alone. |

Bumbro Bumbro - Dina Nath Naadim
The song Bumbro is calling out to the bumbro (bumblebee), which hovers over flowers of the valley, and thanking him for bringing all the beauty and colors of flowers with him. The bumblebee is shyam coloured - the colour of Krishna, which in turn means the color of one’s male lover. The shyam-coloured-bumbro thus signifies that the bumbro is coming from the garden of the groom, and has thus brought with him all his love and affection.
Poet Naadim was inspired by Opera, and wanted to create one for Kashmir. And so was Opera BOMBUR TA YEMBERZAL (The Bumble Bee and the Narcissus flower) conceived and composed by him in 1953.
Bumbro Bumbro shaam rang Bumbro kyaazi chuk chi yuth naalano, ho ho ho | O Bumble Bee, O Dusky Bumble Bee! Why do thee lament so much? |
Haal baav panunuy, ha shaam sundaro Aesi karoi jaan kurbaano, ho ho ho | Tell us your woes, O dusky soul We shall sacrifice this Life for you |

Kas wanai yem sitam - Jinab Ulfat Kishtwari
English translation courtesy: Charred Chinar's Blog
Kas wanai yem sitam, choan choan’ui kasam Marsh’e traevith yitam, pur’khumaaro walo Aaalav’ah boztam, nate khabar soztam Goakh dyith kyazi bram. Baezgaaro walo | To whom shall I unveil the weight of your oppression? I vow by your name - you’ve left me reeling, undone. Come to me, my intoxication. Either heed to my calls or send your whereabouts, why did you deceive me? Come to me, my trickster. |
Ishq chonui chu khaam, ishq chonui chu aam, chukh tse havas’uk ghulaam havaskaaro walo Wechte parvaan’as-ei sokhta jaan’as-ei, Aashiqi zaani sui dodh yus naaro walo | (Here, the Poet speaks to himself in second person.) Your love is immature, your love is ordinary, Bound by the whims of fleeting senses. Come to me, my bearer of reason. See the moth, that charred specter of yearning. For love is the fire that consumes the willing. Love is experienced by those who are willing to burn in its flame. |
Chus be parvaan’e choan, chui ne parvah tse myon, Dilbaro nundboan chukh tse maah-e-misaal Graayi zulf’av niyam, tzhaai chaenei gayam, Maai chaenei mye cham maahpaaro walo | I circle you endlessly, a moth in its trance. While you remain indifferent, distant, aloof. My, darling, you are like the quintessential moon Your tresses tremble, shadows whisper and wane. Your love etched deep within me. Come to me, my moon-shard. |
Paan’e chukh bewafa, chukh tse kharaan me raah, Daadi chaanay be ma barr gayas poshe-maal Yaar’e paadan lagai, zoar naad’an lagai, Ramz saadan lagai, dilfighaar’o walo | You are unfaithful and pin the blame on me. In your longing, I, a garland of fresh flowers wilted away Beloved, let me be offered at your feet, at the altar of your beckoning, your unspoken gestures. Come to me, my heartbroken. |
Ishq majboor chum, husn magroor chum, Yaar mye door chum, kyah sana chus malaal? Maal’e posh’an karai kyah yitam dilbar’ai, Gul gashan ma barr’ai dilqaraar’o walo | Love stands helpless, beauty cloaked in pride. The beloved drifts afar—yet why does sorrow reside? I shall weave garlands of blooms. If only you’d come; they await only you. But linger too long, and they’ll wither away. Come to me, my heart’s solace. |
Ishq tabb chum dil’as kus wanyam bulbul’as, Waav hard’un gul’as vyes anyam maa zawaal Daad’yi chaani gajis ade be paaman lajis, Hyee be naazo phajis loal’e haar’o walo | The fever of love consumed my restless heart. Yet, who will carry my plea to the distant beloved? The autumn winds conspire with their whispers of doom, stripping the branches of hope too soon. Your love melted me away, so I was censured by society. I was jasmine brought up with care. Come, my treasure of love |
May I be sacrificed upon your tresses, your beguiling ways, your henna-dyed nails. See what you’ve done to Ulfat. Grant me a favor, elixir of your love. Stay once you’ve arrived. Come to me, my lifelong friend |

Machaar aav aabe shaaren, bei tsaaren yaar kot gom | The intoxication has reached the waterfalls; I search for where my beloved has gone. I am burning in the fires of love; I search for my beloved. |

Malaal Traveth Che saal yekhna Ba Pyaale mas-kei barai ha laalo Khyaal chaney mea dil chu toshan Ba maale poshan karai ha laalo | Do not leave me drowning in sorrow Let me drink from the goblet of your love, my beloved. For thoughts of you consume my heart, Shower me with the fragrance of love, my beloved |
Chi jal te kastoor soze myani Firaake chyanuk yi saaz wayan Yi zeere bam tche kus boznawyi Ba baal yodway maray ha lalo | Your fire burns through me like musk set aflame This melody plays only the ache of your absence. These low, trembling notes - who else could hear them? I shall die waiting for you to return, my beloved. |
Tse sayi roodukh, bae zayi kerthas Rotuth malalay, wonuy tche kaem kyah Bae neyari tche path karan gadayi Bae nov judayi zaray ha lalo | You stayed untouched - I undid myself completely. Soaked in sorrow, now you ask what ails me? I will not beg at your door like a beggar Yet I burn, my beloved, in this new separation. |
Naseemae boozum tche baalae daameni Kamand heyth chhukh shikaar tchhaaraan Bae shokae chaaney shikaar andar panun Ye sar heyth tarayi ha laalo | I heard of you on the morning breeze, at the mountain's hem You go about hunting with your lasso of beauty. Willingly I become your prey Even at the cost of this life, my beloved |

I have preserved them carefully, as keepsakes, as proof These scars that run alongside your grief, my beloved. |
Bae neyr naeni paethhi baavae lookan Kasaendi amaaran mey zaeji han han Na khoutche paaman kathan woulaaman Na kaansi shatras darayi ha laalo | I do not seek comfort in the gaze of strangers These wounds cry out only your name, over and over. Neither false promises nor hollow words will mend me No shelter shields me from this storm, my beloved |
Bae shraavnechi hee foujis wanan manz wuchhan roozaes bae neybae chaaney Wuchhuth nae haaruk bahaar myonuyi Woni waave hardaeni harayi ha laalo | Like a soldier longing for dawn in the forest of Shravana I have waited, watching for some sign of you. You have become completely indifferent and detached from me. |
Nyer kya vyan aam-manz jaynee Mashrevith chey waday praynye Jamunaye bath bath drayas ha phati phati Baasan chamha chyen chaiye | What use is it to step out among common strangers now? You have completely forgotten all your old, sacred promises. I walked along the banks of Yamuna, broken-hearted and weeping bitterly. Every reflection and shadow I see looks only like your image. |
God neyernas lavythamaa teeraye Dokh duith tham me lavye muray Ghar baar travith, ha soriy mashravith Bhramdith be vejthasa navye | At first, when you would step out, you showered me with affection and love. But now, you have given me nothing but persistent, painful heartache. I abandoned my home/family, completely forgot everything else for you. Plunged into a world of illusions, I am left floating helplessly like a lost boat. |
Paay prich-hyom vankyan shalan Tem chi ritmith mohjan jalan Pemetch be pa maal , Van kas panun haal Vyan kar sa myon he paay | I searched for your tracks, asking the wild jackals of the forests. But they are caught up in their own traps of worldly attachments and illusions I have fallen to ruin, disgraced and broken; to whom shall I now tell the state of my aching heart? Please, look at my miserable condition now and rescue me. |
Salas-Yita myan nand-lalo Vathravye Jaw-her te lalo Boz bansrinaad , gatch kota be shad Manzjigras karye jaaye | Come to me as my guest, O my darling Nand-Lala! I will lay out a path of precious jewels, and pearls just for you to walk upon. Let me hear the divine melody of your flute, and my soul will leap with boundless joy! Come and make your permanent home deep inside the core of my heart. |

Sakhiyav ruthum hai ruthum hai gaseth, buthumai gamanai Tathay vigunav dutham hai, bi chakh demeh na jaamnei | Oh friends, my beloved has become displeased; I am consumed by the sorrow of this separation. Cruel fate has dealt me this blow; I will never forget this moment as long as I live. |
Saendhe jallah tanah naav si, bei seer panuni bhaav si, Kyazih leajthas pama nai bi cha demeh na jaamnei | You have cast my reputation into the burning fire; you have revealed my inner secrets to the world. Why have you subjected me to such humiliation? I will never forget this as long as I live. |
Baaleh paeth naadh layesai, Bei saaze seittaar wayesei Shronay Shronay karas ronai damanai, bi chakh demeh na jaamnei | Standing upon the hilltops, I shall cry out for you; I will play my heart's melodies on the sitar. My anklets/tears will make a rhythmic 'shronay' sound as I weep at your doorstep; I will never forget this [pain] as long as I live |
Tarakh mandla dramutei, zoonei nadaes aamutae Rovyei karo subai shaamnai, bi chakh demeh na jaamnei | The circle of stars has emerged in the sky; even the moon has come out in response to my calls. I shall mourn [the loss of my beloved] from morning until evening; I will never forget this [sorrow] as long as I live. |

Sanz kar koori - poet anonymous
A light-hearted fun song, which almost everyone thought was “Sangtar koori Sangtar koori” when young!
Sanz kar koori sanz kar koori, vaeruv chue gatchun Traave koori khaanemaajer, daanas chue paevun Traave koori khaanemaajer daanas chue paevun | Daughter, prepare yourself; it is time to leave for your new home. Leave behind your childhood games, stop being pampered; you must now embrace a life of wisdom. |
Ye mei monghom ti mei duetmakh, toete ne khosh tim Waen chum GP fund ti bonus tath te patai chim Kuch bhi hoga O my daddy waqtas sut pakun Traave koori khaanemaajer daanas chue paevun | Everything I asked for, you gave me; yet the in-laws are still not satisfied. Now I have my GP (General Provident) fund and my bonus; they even have their eyes on that! Whatever happens, oh my daddy, one must move along with the times. Leave your childhood play behind, daughter; it is time for you to embrace wisdom and responsibility. |
Rishte daaran hamsayan chu azz karun saal Akh baren yaed naate baate baye vannam jadaal Take it easy O my daddy ath laegne sanun Traave koori khaanemaajer daanas chue paevun | Today, we must host a grand feast for relatives and neighbors. Some will fill their bellies with food, yet still find a reason to complain. Take it easy, oh my daddy, don't let it stress you out. Leave your childhood play behind, daughter; it is time for you to embrace wisdom and responsibility. |
Shayad panen gonah khatim te chum vaene baasaan Mei os koori khaab vuchmut naavid mas kasaan I don’t care O my daddy ath chune patth rozun Traave koori khaanemaajer daanas chue paevun | Perhaps all my past youthful mistakes are finally coming to an end. Daughter, I had a dream of you as a little girl, watching your hair being cut (prepared) for your wedding. Father, I don't care about the past anymore Leave your childhood play behind, daughter |

Bulbul chhu behiit ba gul Mushtaq gomut chhu bilkul Nai rozi gul nai bulbul Azz ashq kathaa rozey | The nightingale sits beside the rose, Completely consumed with longing. Neither the rose will remain, nor the nightingale Today only the story of love endures |
Maashooq kyah goyee keenaai Aatash mein borthhum seenai Aashiq chhu kammi taam deenai Maarun ravaa rozey | What did my beloved say, with such spite and cruelty I set fire to my own chest. The lover deserves nothing but loss and ruin It is fitting, then, that he should die |
Muss deutnum kalwaalan Chhiv raavnus aik pyaalun Chhum doori ruzith zaalan Karsanaa dawaa sozey | She handed me over to the tavern keeper Had one cup sent to me. I am left burning in separation What remedy will cure this? |
Kyaa goas malaal roothum Sreh adnuk yaar muthum Kath dard na`iye beuthum Karsana paigaam soazey | What grief it was when she turned away in anger I lost a beloved closer than my own breath. I sit with a pain beyond all words How do I send word to her now? |
Bihith chu khalvakh khaanas Mushtaakh chu paanpaanas Aashakh chu manz vaeraanas Maashokh tanha rozze | She sits in solitude in her chamber, Longing for her own self alone. Love wanders lost in the wilderness The beloved remains alone. |
Maashooq kaerthhum sitam Naazim chhu praraan yittam Chhus tashnaa deedar dittam Pagaah na yi dam rozey | The beloved has inflicted such cruelty upon me Nazim is burning, consumed entirely. He is thirsty - give him just one glimpse By tomorrow, not a breath may remain |

Zarum ne Doorer - Bashir Dada
English Translation provided by bashirdada.blogspot.com
Zarum ne doorer, Khuda gawah chum Kanyen te Baalann mye paan choawum Mye paein Paanai, Yi Zakhm koorum Gahey mye Paanai yi Zakhm soawum | I could not bear estrangement - the Almighty will testify for me, Dashed myself against rocks and mighty cliffs in my misery, Sometimes I exacerbated this oozing wound mercilessly, And sometimes I cajoled myself to sleep – its perpetual agony! |
Mashaan Mashaan gayi Mashid mye saeree Magar Mashun chum Muhaal choani Yi paane Mashraf Gomut mye oasum Su kem sanaa Azz mye yaad poawum | Forgetting, oblivious I forgot the entire world entirely, But to vanquish your memory is entirely beyond me, I had forgotten all about me, oblivious to myself entirely, Who was it that caused me today again to remember me? |
Wadaan Wadaan Prucsh mye poshe bhaghow Su Yaar kati chui Che kyazi Tanhaa Mye Hard waawan dilas dyutnam Yuthui yi haal e Jigar mye bhoawum | Weeping, lamenting the flower meadows enquired of me: Where is your beloved, why do you trudge alone, solitary? The autumn tempest consoled and placated me, As I emptied the heart of its burden of misery!! |
Khodaayi boozin Che aayi hurinai Nazar Che myani Balaayi Laginai Che Zindagi kya Tajee bana win Mye Chaani baapath Jahaan troawum | May your life be bestowed with longevity! May my sight be sacrificed on you!! How well have you adorned your life, astutely! I – the naïve one for you forsook everything completely! |
Mye koot cshoalum Mohabbatas manz Su Haal panunui Kaleje Zaanyam Haraaratas manz Sharaaratas manz Che teer loyuth mye seene doarum. | What a great deal have I borne in love silently! My heart is conversant with that state entirely! In a blazing temper, prompted by your temper fiery, You flung an arrow; I bore it on my heart gaily! |
