Kashmiri Song Lyrics

Kashmir has long inspired poets and musicians with its mystical beauty. From iconic poets like Lal Ded and Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani to soulful Sufiana music, the region’s unique blend of Persian, Sanskrit, and local influences explores themes of spirituality, love, and mysticism.

Despite this, there is surprisingly little literature available online on Kashmiri song lyrics and poetry, limiting access to the region's artistic legacy. The lack of translations and comprehensive resources leaves many beautiful poems and songs under appreciated and largely inaccessible.

Here is an attempt to capture some of the popular songs and their deep profound meaning (songs are listed below or you can download attached PDF file).

Aaz hai aao paane baleyaar - Mirza Ghulam Hassan Beg Arif

Mirza Ghulam Hassan Beg Arif was a 19th-century Kashmiri poet writing in the Persian-inflected classical tradition. He is also the poet behind the beloved Rum Gayem Sheehshass. The reference to baleyaar can mean an address to an intimate companion, a spiritual guide, or God himself.

Lalle lalnovum amaar

Aaz hai aao paane baleyaar

Tiflee dravay myon lockchar

Aaz hai aao pane baleyaar

With tender lullabies, I nurtured this deep longing,

And today, my beloved partner has finally arrived.

My innocent childhood has slipped away into youth,

And today, my beloved partner has finally arrived.

(Lalnouwum: rocked/cradled)

Wasiye chum me chikchav

Maharaze myon hai aav

Wathras poshe ambaar

Aaz hai aao paane baleyaar

O companion, I am bursting with excitement and joy,

For my groom has finally arrived!

Let us shower the pathway with heaps of fresh flowers,

For today, my beloved partner has finally arrived

(chikchav: restless flutter, an agitated stirring)

Chene be chei nish door

Kare kyah be kashir koor

Sanikan chuy parvardigaar

Aaz hai aao paane baleyaar

I am nothing without you, yet I am kept far away from you,

But what else can I do? For I am a Kashmiri girl.

The Almighty Lord is the ultimate protector of our honor,

And today, my beloved partner has finally arrived

Kyah kare gor tai peer

Tche te mein chu kuni taqdeer

Tche ha myon aadnuk yaar

Aaz hai aao paane baleyaar

What use are teachers, priests, or guides now?

For you and I share the exact same destiny.

You are my soulmate from the very beginning of time,

And today, my beloved partner has finally arrived

Kabeele heth aaw saalay

Wude isband ha zaley

Be hasa chyen tabedaar

Aaz hai aao pane baleyaar

The groom has arrived with his entire family and clan.

Let us burn the wild rue seeds (isband) to ward off evil.

I am completely devoted to serving you,

For today, my beloved partner has finally arrived.

Deedov wucch myoun haal
Praraan goam yetch kaal

Eam haye kornam paar paar
Aaz hai aao pane baleyaar

Behold and see the state I am in,

I have spent a lifetime waiting for this moment.

This longing has pierced through my very soul,

And today, my beloved partner has finally arrived

Aisay sharan - Bhajan by Krishna Joo Razdan

This is a stuti (devotional hymn of praise) in the Kashmiri Hindu tradition, addressed to Ganesha as the Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles) and Prathamapujya (the first to be worshipped before any undertaking)

Aisay sharan kartam daya

Om shree ganeshaaya namah

I am in your shelter, asking for compassion

I bow to thee, Lord Ganesha

Yaghnas zapas vevhaar-asii

Gvada chii swaraan, prath kaarsey

Kaaras anaan chukh chi jamah

Om shree ganeshaaya namah

Lord Ganesha, we start all tasks with your prayers

You help get all the tasks done with ease

(Yaghnas = Of sacrifice/yagna)

(Zapas = Of prayer)

Chi chukh zagatuk aadidev

Chi chukh laacha badi kaamdev

Syedh kar chi myon, mann kaamna

Om shree ganeshaaya namah

You are the complete world's lord

You are the lord of love

Lord Ganesha, you help fulfill my desires

Godanyuk chuy che aadhikar

Kali kaalu-kuy chukh taajdaar

Raazas paran paadan pyama

Om shree ganeshaaya namah

You are the first authority on everything

You are the king of all time

Lord Ganesha, I humbly bow to your feet

(Kali kaalu-kuy = From the very beginning of time)

aisey sharan

Akh Raath Naa Kaed Yaaro - Mahjoor

Arman kafan walithee Tasveer hyeth chanee

Akh raath na kaed yaaro Mein kati neri zindagani

With your image held close, like a shroud wrapped around my longing
Not even a single night did it last, friends - where did my life vanish to?

Majboor kares azlan Be aar taqdeeran

Mokh chani bey fuurus Peeran te astanan

Karhakh meherbani Pyeth myani jawani

My shameless fate has made me utterly powerless
I fell at the feet of saints and their shrines, pleading on your behalf.

Show some kindness upon my youth and have mercy on it.

(Azlan = Shameless, brazen)

(Astanan = Shrines, sacred thresholds)

Mosoom shakal chanee Kari maare deewanan

Bedar keras nendre Be hushar eim wahman

Cha mein keech pareshani Kati chus be samblanee

Your innocent face has destroyed the mad lovers, laid them to ruin.
It woke me from my sleep. I am wide awake now, these signs are real. Is there some worry of yours? Where was I, that I could not even hold myself together?

(Bedar keras = Woke me, made me alert)

(Wahman = Omens, signs)

Sahil mein por kalimay Toiba yutuy zaenith

Mein khodayi sey bagair Kahn hek no samblawith

Pate keecha majboori Hechnam mein nish doori

O Sahil, I am brimming with words at the shore, yet repentance is as boundless as the sky.
Without the grace of God, no one, not one soul, can sustain themselves.
Then came this helplessness and it tore you far away from me.

(Toiba = Repentance, turning back to God)

Antan su madan waar - Habba Khatoon

Habba Khatoon (c. 1554–1609) was the wife of Yusuf Shah Chak, the last independent king of Kashmir before Mughal conquest. When her husband was exiled, she spent the rest of her life composing songs of separation. Her firaaq was therefore not metaphorical, every poem she wrote was a real lament for a real beloved taken by real political force.

Bulbul firaaq wyon dyu gulan

Antan su madan waar

The nightingale sings in separation from the flowers,

but the master of the soul is he alone (the beloved)

(Firaaq = Separation, the pain of being apart)

(Wyon Gulan = Sang, cried out to/for the roses)

Kyah kyah wonunum, mea gaefilas

Chum na bozan zaar

Moorus ba temsind tagafulan

Antan su madan waar

What all has been said, but this foolish (ignorant) person,

does not hear the painful plea.

Death will come from his neglect (or ignorance),

but the master of the soul is he alone.

(Gaefilas = To the heedless one, the careless beloved)

(Tagaaful = deliberate indifference)

Khumaar kya chus yemberzalan

Harnan karaan shikaar

Shikar chanei jungle alan

Antan su madan waar

What is this intoxication that has surrounded,

and the deer are hunting.

The jungle is yours (the beloved's) to hunt,

but the master of the soul is he alone.

Subhu wawtai noor chu falaan

Aalam chu umeedwar

Aki nazrei tehende bemaar balan

Antan su madan waar

With the morning breeze, a light spreads,

and the whole world is full of hope.

And for the sick, one glance from you (the beloved) is enough,

because the master of the soul is he alone.

(Subhu wawtai = When dawn arrived)

Aashiq che dramith salla dalaan

Char-lezimith brassiwaar

Chei Habba Khatoon, tate ho balan

Antan su madan waar

The lovers (devotees) wander about,

longing for you.

You too, Habba Khatoon, are there,

but the master of the soul is he alone.

(Salla dalaan = Wandering the mountains)

(Char-lezimith = Having torn the clothes)

(Brassiwaar = The slopes, the hillsides)

(Tate ho balan = she calls out)

Antan madanwaar

Bal Marayo - Rasul Mir

Betino Ye Durer Chon Zaray, Bal Marayo,

Kyah Kar’e Thovtham zara zaray, Bal Marayo

This separation from you, I can longer bear

You have made me this piteous. I will wither away young

(Zaray = With longing/yearning)

(Bal Marayo = My heart is struck/killed)

Shahmar zulfow nal wolham, rud afsanay,

wyon wanta kam afsana paray, Bal Marayo

Your snake-like tresses have entangled me,

And this has become a tale. What other tales would you like to hear?

(Shahmar = King of serpents)

(Rud afsanay = Old stories, ancient tales)

(Afsana paray = Read/tell the story)

Dil khasta karthas, nas kyah cheey, ropa sanz shamsher.

kam sher marith kanjaray, Bal Marayo

My heart is shattered, By the straight, silver like nose on your face.

How many have died by the dagger of your beauty?

(Dil khasta = Heart wounded)
(Kanjaray = In the corner/gutter)

Sharmanda Karthas aftabo, Qandharich zun,

kali chani gajisay lajisa daray, Bal Marayo

I, the full moon of Qandahar’, am ashamed

0f your brilliance, my sun. Waiting, wilting in your remembrance.

(Daray = At the door)

Anyi gati vaninam nani kathay, lal faroshan

kani manz neyran jowharay, Bal Marayo

In my ignorance, the precious stone-seller.

Revealed the obvious to me. It is the rock that yields the gem.

(Lal faroshan = Sellers of rubies)

Hesa vyesa ravthas maramatyo, vyesa kamo chhay,

te’me sani khota chha sondaray, Bal Marayo

You have made me lose my bearings, my love.

Whom are you enamoured of? Are they more beautiful than I?

(Maramatyo = Having been struck/wounded)

Yeth lola bagas zakhmi dil gul, sarva chhu myon ah.

ashivani joyi phiray, Bal Marayo

In this garden of longing, the rose of my wounded heart,  the cypress breathes my sigh. May the ill-omen turn back and find its sender.

(Ashivani = The curse, the ill-wish)

(Joyi phiray = May it turn back)

Chhum khafa laray patta, laay brontha nalas thaph

damana ratay masharay, Bal Marayo

You are annoyed, I shall run after you, And hold you by the collar of your cloak. Grasp its hem on the day of resurrection

(Laray patta = After quarrelling)

(Masharay = In public, before witnesses)

Be aaroo - Rajesh Khar

Be aaroo, teer mo laayi

Mein cham maayi chaani

Loguth kyasi beparwah

Mein cham maayi chaani

O heartless one, do not strike me with your arrows,

For I harbor nothing but love for you.

Why have you become so indifferent and distant?

When I harbor nothing but love for you

Laal royas, saal karhai,

Pyaali barhaai panay

Thaal sheerith, kortham zaai

Mein cham maayi chaani

I arranged a grand feast for this tulip face,

And I poured the goblets of wine with my own hands.

But you laid my entire banquet to waste and left it ruined,

Yet I still harbor nothing but love for you

Seeni muchrith, haal baway,

Keene chalhem jigras

Deedar haaw, kar myon upay

Mein cham maayi chaani

I will bare my chest to reveal the true state of my heart,

Hoping it will wash away the malice and pain inside your soul.

Grant me just one glimpse of your face, and heal my suffering,

For I still harbor nothing but love for you

Bram Dith Saqi - Fazil Kashmiri

English translation courtesy: Charred Chinar's Blog

Bram dith Saqi, Nashe raevith goam,

Channe ross pyale goam khaeli’yay

Hai Athhe vyesryom, Vess ma su pyom,

Channe ross pyale goam khaeli’yay

I lost intoxication at Cupbearer’s deception,

My cup emptied even before I drank

Alas! My hand trembled, it might have spilled,

My cup emptied even before I drank

Pyaraan pyaraan sorui doh goam,

raat’as rozum temsinz aash

Adde phaelli gaash’an Mashraevith goam,

Channe ross pyale goam khaeli’yay

I lost days waiting for him,

during nights his hope remained

At dawn, he forgot about me,

My cup emptied even before I drank

Lol’uk souda drog khote drog pyom,

Srog pyom zanun panun’ui paan

Zyooth zindagi hyund doh yootch krooth pyom,

Channe ross pyale goam khaeli’yay

The bargain of love proved costly,

only realization that it is I who is cheap

This life is long and each day a burden,

My cup emptied even before I drank

Vade na, vyesiyay? Taeth laayakh goam,

mye hai gov paez paeth mandnyen shaam

Mashoq yiwunui vaapas sakhryom,

Channe ross pyale goam khaeli’yay

Dear Friend, should I not weep? It has come to that.

My days have truly turned into dark nights

The beloved started to leave upon arrival,

My cup emptied even before I drank

Shoqe saan zaeni hund mass baegrom,

Bay-zaan cheth gayi dil hushaar

Lukh chaavnevim, paanas parre pyom

Channe ross pyale goam khaeli’yay

I distributed my share of drink with affection,

the ignorant drank and became enlightened

Everyone drank from my share leaving nothing for me,

My cup emptied even before I drank

Husn’ich saendri manz, mann chalnavyom,

aeshqan kaernas aenn’e khotte saaf

Tzyoonum paanas kyahtaam varr goam,

Channe ross pyale goam khaeli’yay

In the basin of beauty I washed my heart,

the love cleansed me clearer than the mirror

But I realized still something has gone wrong,

My cup emptied even before I drank

Shill’e’kis aenas “Hoo” khanenavyom,

Rooh parnavyom “Allahu”

Fazila ath haal’as akh lachh sanne goam,

Channe ross pyale goam khaeli’yay

I carved “Hoo” in the mirror of stone,

taught soul to recite ‘Allahu’

But Fazil, I am still in this condition for last 100,000 years,

My cup emptied even before I drank

Bumbro Bumbro - Dina Nath Naadim

The song Bumbro is calling out to the bumbro (bumblebee), which hovers over flowers of the valley, and thanking him for bringing all the beauty and colors of flowers with him. The bumblebee is shyam coloured - the colour of Krishna, which in turn means the color of one’s male lover. The shyam-coloured-bumbro thus signifies that the bumbro is coming from the garden of the groom, and has thus brought with him all his love and affection.

Poet Naadim was inspired by Opera, and wanted to create one for Kashmir. And so was Opera BOMBUR TA YEMBERZAL (The Bumble Bee and the Narcissus flower) conceived and composed by him in 1953.

Bumbro Bumbro shaam rang Bumbro

kyaazi chuk chi yuth naalano, ho ho ho

O Bumble Bee, O Dusky Bumble Bee!

Why do thee lament so much?

Haal baav panunuy, ha shaam sundaro

Aesi karoi jaan kurbaano, ho ho ho

Tell us your woes, O dusky soul

We shall sacrifice this Life for you

Hardan zardi pher sapzaras

Baag ma gachi wearaano, ho ho ho

O Delicate Narcissus flower! Uptil now,

you Have undergone pain and suffering alone.

And now we shall ensure your meeting Bumble Bee, to fulfill all your pent up desires.

Chani bartal rayem ha raechi - Mehmood Gami

Chani bartal rayem ha raechi, aawaz waechino

I fritted the night away at your door, Did my plea not reach you?

Khaes zarr tye, bar gye chaetchye, chaess swargaetch yemberzal,

Vairei bumbraen gayas samaetchye, aawaz waechino

In your wait, the curd became spoiled and flowers shed their petals. In the love/yearning of Bumbur (bumble bee) I Yemberzal, have come to an end. Did my plea not reach you?

Sahibo lagai chani kudraechi, yanne wuchmai nooraan chon,

Chani noorukh chum talab-yaechi aawaz waechino

Lord be I sacrificed on your splendor,  since I witnessed your splendor. I roam yearning for that splendor Did my plea not reach you?

Bael baeli mayi pakke yaechey, gael kaetya samsaaran,

Kaman soorchan gachaan myeachey aawaz waechino

Dear friend, don’t strut thus, how many were consumed by this world! How many pretty faces were ground to dust!

Did my plea never reach you?

Yaare kaerthas aarye kaetchye, khaer thowtham gulabo,

Maswal chaess nindre haetchey, aawaz waechino

My beloved how helpless your love has made me,

You (rose) have kept me guessing. I am Maswal (Iris) awoken from sleep. Did my plea never reach you?

Kenzi barmai sarey neamachey kheni sahibo aahaem ne zanh,

Andh kun chass mandcheymechey aawaz waechino.

I hoarded all the delicacies in a kyenzi (special vessel in Kashmir used for eating rice in).....yet you never deigned to come

I lie ashamed in my room. Did my prayer never reach you?

Mehmoodo duniya sann chey saath saath par istighafar,

Kael samkhav qayamaechey aawaz waechino.

‘Mehmood’ contemplate the world, and seek forgiveness

Perchance we might meet of judgement day

Did my plea never reach you?

Che loguth sorme chashman - Rassa Javidani

Che loguth sorme chashman,

Me kortham dil wubaeli.

Che chhi gesu pareshan,

Me gayi shahmar naaeli.

Applying kohl on your eyes,

You made my heart go wild.

Your tresses disheveled,

Ensnared me like a coiled serpent

Che laeyith teer e michhgaan,

Me dorui seene kaanan.

Me gayi sadpaar jigras,

Che ma goy vaar khaeli.

You lashes launched arrows swift,

My heart readily accepted unfettered.

My heart shattered into hundred pieces,

You did not miss even a single dart.

Che chakh Bilquees waqtich,

Setha chhui rutbe a'aeli.

Sulaiman jah keetyah,

Che chhi bartal sawaeli.

You hold the status of Empress Bilquees modern-day,

With grandeur that is truly unparalled.

As Emperor Sulaiman of yester-years did,

Many beg at your doorstep, humbled and impelled

Su manz aaeen khanas,

Wuchhan oas paaen paanas.

Karaan haeraan jahaanas,

Yuhai aalam misaeli.

Within the hall of mirrors stood she,

Gazing upon countless reflections of herself.

A surreal scene causing unease,

Nowhere else such a sight to delve.

Rasa haeraan chi deeshith,

Zamanich la wubaeli.

Wanan pastas baala,

Kamalas be-kamaeli.

Rasa is astonished on witnessing,

The present times dampness.

The lowly is considered king,

The proficiency as ineptness.

Naal’as be chooni jareha, chaayan be rang bareha

Namme’nei be khoon mal’eha gosum aekhtiyaar aasun

I would have decorated the hem of your dress, I would have coloured the shadows. I would have dyed my nails with my own blood, if only I had any say over myself.

Bozum byemaar ketyah che nish yiwaan ilaaj’as

Be te roi choan vucheha, be gasus byemaar aasun

I heard that many a sick soul come to you seeking a cure. I too would have kept waiting and watching for you, if only I were the patient.

Baagah dil’uk sajaevith chol baagwaan rooshit

Ade phael gulaab kaetyah, ya goas shumaar aasun

The gardener tended the garden of the heart lovingly, yet left in anger. How many roses bloomed after that, if only there had been a count.

Basaan mye chum marr’e ma, bass chum akh tamanah

Wanei chaani braand’e kanni tael, me gosum mazar aasuun

I feel I am dying, I have but one wish left. Let it be said: beneath your threshold lies my grave, if only that were my resting place.

Praanyan Basheer kare kyah goas nov zakhm aasun
Yodvai che teer laayakh, be gasus shikaar aasun

What good are these old wounds, O dear Basheer, they should have been fresh. If you were worthy of drawing the arrow,  if only I were your quarry.

Once a daughter is born to you

You will get entangled in the mesh of life.

Once a lion, you will be reduced to a jackal.

Yet the wait for my love

Cholhama roshay roshay - Habba Khatoon

Cholhama roshay roshay,

Walo myani pooshay madno Cholhama.

Having snatched my heart you have gone far off,

Come, my love, my flowery Cupid!

Wal weis gaswaai aabas,

Duniya nindri te khwaabas

Kus wyeni dedi tai baabas,

Walo myani pooshay madno

Let us go, friend, to fetch water:

The world is fast aslumber, Love,

I yearn for a response from you,

Come, O Come, my flowery Cupid

Wal wyes gasvaai hyandai,

Paneneo kaed haso rhandai

Teman teo moun hue banay

Walo myani pooshay madno

Let us go friend to gather herbs,

Heartless people make fun of me,

Would that they were in a similar plight!

Come, O Come, my flowery Cupid.

Walai wyes gaswai babrai,

Chok looi namo loole tabri

Zah na aak myani khabrai

Walo myani pooshay madno

Let us go, friend, to gather basil,

Wounding my heart with the axe,

Disdains he even to inquire of me,

Come, O Come, my flowery Cupid.

Wal wyes gasvaaai hyee-yai,

Yus mari su katyu yeeyai

Praaraan tahenzei zyee-yai

Walo myani pooshay madno

Let us go, my friend, to gather jasmine,

Once dead, none can enjoy life;

I hanker for your prosperity, Love,

Come, O Come, my flowery Cupid.

Dil Tsooran/Churan - Prithvi Nath Kaul 'SAYIL'

Dil Tsooran hai dil nyoem shaaman

Paaman thevnam jaaey

Yeenah baye zanh ratehas daaman

Paaman thevnam jaaey

The one who stole my heart, in the cover of darkness

And left me to face people's ridicule

If he comes back, I will grab the hem of his shirt and plead

to the one who left me to face people's ridicule

Mei paan veid veid zadd gaem paanas,

Kaanas laennas aas nai aar

Khare mei thovnam, chaakh dim jaaman,

Paaman thevnam jaaey

My tears have pierced wounds in my body

And inflicted intense sorrow upon me

These thorns that I have received, incite me to tear my robe, my identity

And left me to face people's ridicule

Aam kalwaalan mas dyut mei yakdam,

Soor goem vanij, sui chhum gam

Hoeche matche vere maa naeran baaman,

Paaman thevnam jaaey

Dilbaro mye dilas - Nyaam Saeb

English translation courtesy: Charred Chinar's Blog

Dilbaro Mye dil’as Kaas gaangal’ai

Be balai chaan’ai deedaar saet

O’ beloved, rid my heart rid of hesitations

Only thy sight is my cure now.

Aaftaab roi’yo sheen Zan gal’ai

Yakh galai chaanay garmei seat

Aab myaele aab’as, kyah mojaadalai

Be balai chaan’ai deedaar saet

You, with a face like Sun; and I, a ball of snow

I, like ice melting away with the brilliance of your radiance.

Water mingles with water there’s no opposition there.

Only thy sight is my cure now.

Asmean waejthas dyeder ya jall’ai

doddur tsaam maedrai maeldai saet

Talakh goam rogan, be jigar talai

Be balai chaan’ai deedaar saet

I, a flying bird was; you, a walker made me crawl

Got rotten with sweetness of thy love

I lost everything, only my heart is yet to be lost now.

Only thy sight is my cure now.

Neel farosh darr hazratbal’ai

Bar takht shubaan soan sardaar

Khaak mal roi’yas aam khaas talai

Be balai chaan’ai deedaar saet

Sapphire seller at Hazratbal

Our master, adorned on the throne

Rub your face in dust, for commoners are the actual nobles there

Only thy sight is my cure now.

Yaar be waesthei ath khorr chali

Chalith karhai salaamah

Sar trov nyaam’an chaani bar’talai

Be balai chaan’ai deedaar saet

Come beloved so I’ll wash your feet

And send salutations upon you after that

Nyaam has put his head on your doorstep.

Only your sight is my cure now.

Gah chon pevaan gati - Habba Khatoon

This song was sung by Habba Khatun when her husband king Yusuf shah was arrested by Mugals. gah chon piyaan gati. akh lati e him na. (the light of your remembrance falls on me please come back at least once.)

Gah chon pevaan gati

Aki lati yi ham na

The light of your memory falls on me, and the darkness disappears

Won't you come, come back at least once?

Yaavan myaani kirmeez pati

Kamyu vaan rangnay aakh

Me no zon atter czatti

Aki lati yi ham na

My youth was dyed in the glorious shade of rose-red wool

And to think it would be wasted as food for moths...

Won't you come, come back at least once?

Yaaras yeli yaar czatti

Mohabbat na rozaan saer

Yaar daadii vaenij phatti

Aki lati yi ham na

When the Beloved tears his lover apart,

Love ceases to be

The pain of separation aches my heart,

Won't you come, come back just for me?

Gaste wesiyay Laal chum dooray - Rasul Mir

Gaste wesiyay, Laal chum dooray

Mye chu mooray lalwun naar

Dearest friend, go and lookout for my beloved,

For my saplings have an inferno to bear.

*(Moor- plant sapling, too feeble to stand on its own weight)

*(Lalwun– To rock something as in a cradle )

Garre draayas gare’kyan tsooray

Neel naag’ai loosum doh

Raat lajemo raah musaafooray

Mye chu mooray lalwun naar

Out of my home I sneaked

Alas! It was nightfall just at NeelNaag

All night like a wayfarer, I roamed

For my saplings have an inferno to bear

Maaje raechnas kaande kostoorey

Aame doad’e seat navnaevnam tann

Sui paan logum metche mozoorai

Mye chu mooray lalwun naar

Mother held me with love sweetest

Best of nourishment did my body get

That same body now toils in dust

For my saplings have an inferno to bear

Hash’e laeinam zaevij mooray

Pootche tsotnam paekh anzul

Gaseha maalyun su te chum dooray

Mye chu mooray lalwun naar

Mother-in-law beat me with whips

Tore apart the border of my veil

Would’ve ran back home, but far away it is

For my saplings have an inferno to bear

*(Zaevij Moor- thin stick that makes a whip sound when swung)

*(Pootch- headscarf)

*(Paekh anzul- used to be special brocade over the headscarf)

Aes kokil’ah maedaan dooray

Sua che paraan Allah’hu

Sua che laejmech waalwaash’i dooray

Mye chu mooray lalwun naar

A bird in some far away forest

Is reciting Allah’hu

She’s away, in a trap caught

For my saplings have an inferno to bear

*(Waalwaash- A luring trap used by hunters)

Domb’e daadai traayem cheerai

Dash mye ganjmai aastaan’an

Yas ne dai dei tas Kate pooray

Mye chu mooray lalwun naar

I even looked at tarots for motherhood

Tied sacred threads in shrines

If lord doesn’t provide you, you’re no good

For my saplings have an inferno to bear

*(Domb’e daadai-  condition of a hopeful mother who’s unable to conceive)

*(Cheere- To cast a lot)

Ye chu Rasul Mir Shahbad dooray

Tem chu trovmut aeshq’un dukaan

Yeevu aashiqo, cheyiv toori tooray

Mye chu mooray lalwun naar

There’s Rasool Mir at Shahbad

He has opened the tavern of love

Lovers go thee and drink cups full

For my saplings have an inferno to bear

gatchi vasiye laal chhum doorey

Hakeemo waare wechtam -  AMADAR-I-LADORI (Ahmad Ladur)

Hakeemo waare wechtam, doad nai dagg kamich cham?

Dawa dimm kyah gasi kam, doad nai dagg kamich cham?

O’ healer, treat me properly, why this pain if I have no malady?

Prescribe something to me, as may like thee, why this pain if I have no malady?

Tse yikhna soan saal’ai, karai zuv jaan hawaalai

Bara’y gaye zulf-e-kham, doad nai dagg kamich cham?

Won’t you attend my function where I’ll handover my life to you?

My tresses have lost their knots, why this pain if I have no malady?

Be dimiha chaak jaam’an, be khotchaan lukk’e paam’an

Sanyomut chum yuhai gham, doad nai dagg kamich cham?

I’d tear my robe apart had I no fear of being slandered

This melancholia is eating me up, why this pain if I have no malady?

Mye gaerr jaame zareenik, andir gamit mye cham ael

Banyam kar aab-e-zam zam, doad nai dagg kamich cham?

I wear robes of glittering gold, though inside I’m rotten old

When will I receive my share of (sacred water) ZamZam, why this pain if I have no malady?

Syetha cham aash chaenei, wandai gaash daael daali

Yitamo roi haavtam, doad nai dagg kamich cham?

I’m pinning lot of hopes on you, may you always bathe in gilding light

Please come, show me thy illuminating face, why this pain if I have no malady?

Kas wanai yem sitam - Jinab Ulfat Kishtwari

English translation courtesy: Charred Chinar's Blog

Kas wanai yem sitam, choan choan’ui kasam

Marsh’e traevith yitam, pur’khumaaro walo

Aaalav’ah boztam, nate khabar soztam

Goakh dyith kyazi bram. Baezgaaro walo

To whom shall I unveil the weight of your oppression?

I vow by your name - you’ve left me reeling, undone. Come to me, my intoxication.

Either heed to my calls or send your whereabouts, why did you deceive me? Come to me, my trickster.

Ishq chonui chu khaam, ishq chonui chu aam,

chukh tse havas’uk ghulaam havaskaaro walo

Wechte parvaan’as-ei sokhta jaan’as-ei,

Aashiqi zaani sui dodh yus naaro walo

(Here, the Poet speaks to himself in second person.)

Your love is immature, your love is ordinary, Bound by the whims of fleeting senses. Come to me, my bearer of reason.

See the moth, that charred specter of yearning. For love is the fire that consumes the willing. Love is experienced by those who are willing to burn in its flame.

Chus be parvaan’e choan, chui ne parvah tse myon,

Dilbaro nundboan chukh tse maah-e-misaal

Graayi zulf’av niyam, tzhaai chaenei gayam,

Maai chaenei mye cham maahpaaro walo

I circle you endlessly, a moth in its trance. While you remain indifferent, distant, aloof. My, darling, you are like the quintessential moon

Your tresses tremble, shadows whisper and wane. Your love etched deep within me. Come to me, my moon-shard.

Paan’e chukh bewafa, chukh tse kharaan me raah,

Daadi chaanay be ma barr gayas poshe-maal

Yaar’e paadan lagai, zoar naad’an lagai,

Ramz saadan lagai, dilfighaar’o walo

You are unfaithful and pin the blame on me. In your longing, I, a garland of fresh flowers wilted away

Beloved, let me be offered at your feet, at the altar of your beckoning, your unspoken gestures. Come to me, my heartbroken.

Ishq majboor chum, husn magroor chum,

Yaar mye door chum, kyah sana chus malaal?

Maal’e posh’an karai kyah yitam dilbar’ai,

Gul gashan ma barr’ai dilqaraar’o walo

Love stands helpless, beauty cloaked in pride. The beloved drifts afar—yet why does sorrow reside?

I shall weave garlands of blooms. If only you’d come; they await only you. But linger too long, and they’ll wither away. Come to me, my heart’s solace.

Ishq tabb chum dil’as kus wanyam bulbul’as,

Waav hard’un gul’as vyes anyam maa zawaal

Daad’yi chaani gajis ade be paaman lajis,

Hyee be naazo phajis loal’e haar’o walo

The fever of love consumed my restless heart. Yet, who will carry my plea to the distant beloved? The autumn winds conspire with their whispers of doom, stripping the branches of hope too soon.

Your love melted me away, so I was censured by society. I was jasmine brought up with care. Come, my treasure of love

Zulf’e kham’nei lagai, yaar bram’nei lagai,

Maenz’nam-nei lagai Ulfat’un wech tse haal

Jaam akh chaav’tam, kyah minath thaav’tam,

Yith matt’o raavtam jaan’iyaaro walo

May I be sacrificed upon your tresses, your beguiling ways, your henna-dyed nails. See what you’ve done to Ulfat.

Grant me a favor, elixir of your love. Stay once you’ve arrived. Come to me, my lifelong friend

Khanmaej Koor - Nazir Ahmed Dass

Be chesay khanmaej koer,

Mei chuey vaeriv setha duur,

tuer ho yezum, lageyo paer jaano

I’m the dearest daughter,

It’s time to bid me farewell, O beloved brother

My new abode is very far, but

Let the distance never come between me & you

Baeb te moej gaei paraishaan,

yele ha porhuem wairwuek samaan

Hei maenzilus watun mei chu zaroor,

du mei rokhsat meine baijano

Mom and Dad went into grief,

While packing my belongings.

Alas the new home of beau beckons me

It’s time to bid me farewell, O beloved brother

Hayo hey meine bobai,

Thath ghacham bakhchuen zaroor,

du mei rokhsat meine baijano

Oh ma, my ma, listen to me, now will you?

If ever my words & actions bore a hurtful hue

You must forgive me as I begin anew

It’s time to bid me farewell, O beloved brother

Maluen ma yaaed paeyum,

yath jigras teer ma yiyam

Dhai che raechnei barpoor,

du mei rokhsat meine baijano

As memories of home stack up,

It pierces my feeble heart like a sharp dagger

May you be blessed forever

It’s time to bid me farewell, O beloved brother

KASHMIRI WEDDING SONG - KHANMAEJ KOOR

Machar aav aabsharan - Mehjoor

Machaar aav aabe shaaren, bei tsaaren yaar kot gom
Bie zajnas loolnaran,  bei tsaaren yaar kot gom

The intoxication has reached the waterfalls; I search for where my beloved has gone.

I am burning in the fires of love; I search for my beloved.

Bei chas lool maye vajmech,  bei chas bag heyi fojmech

Mey yauven ha shole maran,  bei tsaaren yaar kot gom

I am struck by the lightning of love and affection; I am like a garden of jasmine that has been ravaged.

My youth is ablaze; I search for my beloved.

Su lool sir kuy pampoosh, naav yavnuk nov josh

Nishaatv te shalimarn, bei tsaaren yaar kot gom

That secret of love is like the lotus flower (pampoosh); it is the name of a new passion/fervor of youth.

Through Nishaat and Shalinmar (gardens), I search for my beloved.

Yato lalo yetamo, yetmo aaz yetomo

Mey voot kuoot kaal prayran, bei tsaaren yaar kot gom

Come, my darling, come here; come here today, come here.

How much time has passed for me in waiting; I search for my beloved.

Malaal Traveth Che Saal Yekhna - Mehjoor

Malaal Traveth Che saal yekhna

Ba Pyaale mas-kei barai ha laalo

Khyaal chaney mea dil chu toshan

Ba maale poshan karai ha laalo

Do not leave me drowning in sorrow

Let me drink from the goblet of your love, my beloved.

For thoughts of you consume my heart,

Shower me with the fragrance of love, my beloved

Chi jal te kastoor soze myani

Firaake chyanuk yi saaz wayan

Yi zeere bam tche kus boznawyi

Ba baal yodway maray ha lalo

Your fire burns through me like musk set aflame

This melody plays only the ache of your absence.

These low, trembling notes - who else could hear them?

I shall die waiting for you to return, my beloved.

Tse sayi roodukh, bae zayi kerthas

Rotuth malalay, wonuy tche kaem kyah

Bae neyari tche path karan gadayi

Bae nov judayi zaray ha lalo

You stayed untouched - I undid myself completely.

Soaked in sorrow, now you ask what ails me?

I will not beg at your door like a beggar

Yet I burn, my beloved, in this new separation.

Naseemae boozum tche baalae daameni

Kamand heyth chhukh shikaar tchhaaraan

Bae shokae chaaney shikaar andar panun

Ye sar heyth tarayi ha laalo

I heard of you on the morning breeze, at the mountain's hem

You go about hunting with your lasso of beauty.

Willingly I become your prey

Even at the cost of this life, my beloved

Mea khooni jigrichi yem chooni jarem

Rachaan wootum mea raeth raatas

Thavem Sambaleth Nishaane Baapath

Yem Chooni Naalas Jarai ha Laalo

The wounds of my bleeding heart - those wounds of yours

I kept vigil over them through the long dark of night.

I have preserved them carefully, as keepsakes, as proof

These scars that run alongside your grief, my beloved.

Bae neyr naeni paethhi baavae lookan

Kasaendi amaaran mey zaeji han han

Na khoutche paaman kathan woulaaman

Na kaansi shatras darayi ha laalo

I do not seek comfort in the gaze of strangers

These wounds cry out only your name, over and over.

Neither false promises nor hollow words will mend me

No shelter shields me from this storm, my beloved

Bae shraavnechi hee foujis wanan manz

wuchhan roozaes bae neybae chaaney

Wuchhuth nae haaruk bahaar myonuyi

Woni waave hardaeni harayi ha laalo

Like a soldier longing for dawn in the forest of Shravana

I have waited, watching for some sign of you.

But no spring has come to bloom within my season

Now the winds of autumn scatter everything, my beloved.

Gaemetch yembarzal firaak chhaevith

Dubaar aayas bae lolae chaaney

Wandayi aechhan hund bae gaash paadan

Dubaar lolah barayi ha laalo

The narcissus has wilted in the cold of separation

If only love could return to me once more.

Let my eyes offer their very light at your feet

Come back, come back to me, my beloved.

Wanaan Mehjoor tche roshi yikhna

Damah beheykhna katha karakhna

Bae paanae shaahanae saaz waaye

Taraanae naevi naevi parayi ha laalo

Mehjoor speaks - do not let your radiance dim

Breathe on, keep speaking, do not fall silent.

I shall compose a melody worthy of kings

And sing it, ever new, ever new, my beloved.

Mashraevthas Janaan - Rasa Javidani

English translation courtesy: Charred Chinar's Blog

Mashraevthas janaan, che kar yaad pyemai bo

Chukh az wafa begaane, che kar yaad pyemai bo

My Beloved, You have consigned me to oblivion, when will you remember me?

Today, you are careless of my affection, will you remember me?

Dar-e-dil karemai jaay, mat'hai maay nigaaro

Kaab’as mye gov but’khaane, che kar yaad pyemai bo

I placed you deep within my heart, but my love you took for granted

My Kaaba turned to temple of idols, when will you remember me?

Barre myaani zanh maa tzaakh, be darmand syetha goas

Ae dard ke darmaan’e, che kar yaad pyemai bo

You never came to me, leaving me forlorn

O’ the cure of pain, when will you remember me?

Gatt’yi manz mye antam gaash, mye chei aash syetha chaen

Khursheed Darkhshaan, che kar yaad pyemai bo

Deliver me from this darkness to light, for I’ve hope in you

O’ the constellation of Suns, when will you remember me?

Bazaar’i misr’as manz gayas, awaare Zulaikha

Ae Yusuf-ay-Kinaan, che kar yaad pyemai bo

I, like heartbroken Zulaikha, roam aimlessly in bazaars of Egypt

O’ Yusuf of Kinaan, when will you remember me?

Radha’ye Jigras kaan taarith paan marith goakh

Gopal Krishan Kanha, che kar yaad pyemai bo

You pierced the heart of this Radha and left her to die

Gopal Krishan Kanha, when will you remember me?

Akh jalwe haewith aashiq’an falwah che karith goakh

Chuy alam’ah dewaane, che kar yaad pyemai bo

You just showed a glimpse to your lovers, that drove them mad

The entire world is yearning for you, when will you remember me?

Tyuth jazbe gashi yuth zyi Rasa’as oore tse wanhakh

Mashoor sukhandaan, che kar yaad pyemai bo

You should be having such a passion that it will address Rasa (Javidani) and ask him

O’ famous poet, when will you remember me?

Mat Ha Martam Krishno Graaye - Prem Nath "Shad"

Mat ha martam krishno graaye

Katyi jaaye byuthuk churiye,

Kath vaen chaye duriye

Radha be kerthas zaaye

Do not wound/torment me with your shifting whims, O Krishna!

Where have you gone to sit hidden in secret?

Why do you keep such a painful distance from me now?

You have utterly ruined and undone me, your Radha.

Lokchaaras lool ho bortham

Shur narnye bingre ho jariytham

God seer bevyith, paat-ha door trevith

Loguth chey be parvaye

In our childhood, you filled my heart completely with love.

For my delicate child-wrists, you adorned me with colorful bangles.

At first, you shared all your deep secrets, but now you keep me far away.

You have become completely indifferent and detached from me.

Nyer kya vyan aam-manz jaynee

Mashrevith chey waday praynye

Jamunaye bath bath drayas ha phati phati

Baasan chamha chyen chaiye

What use is it to step out among common strangers now?

You have completely forgotten all your old, sacred promises.

I walked along the banks of Yamuna, broken-hearted and weeping bitterly.

Every reflection and shadow I see looks only like your image.

God neyernas lavythamaa teeraye

Dokh duith tham me lavye muray

Ghar baar travith, ha soriy mashravith

Bhramdith be vejthasa navye

At first, when you would step out, you showered me with affection and love.

But now, you have given me nothing but persistent, painful heartache.

I abandoned my home/family, completely forgot everything else for you.

Plunged into a world of illusions, I am left floating helplessly like a lost boat.

Paay prich-hyom vankyan shalan

Tem chi ritmith mohjan jalan

Pemetch be pa maal , Van kas panun haal

Vyan kar sa  myon he paay

I searched for your tracks, asking the wild jackals of the forests.

But they are caught up in their own traps of worldly attachments and illusions

I have fallen to ruin, disgraced and broken; to whom shall I now tell the state of my aching heart?

Please, look at my miserable condition now and rescue me.

Salas-Yita myan nand-lalo

Vathravye Jaw-her te lalo

Boz bansrinaad , gatch kota be shad

Manzjigras karye jaaye

Come to me as my guest, O my darling Nand-Lala!

I will lay out a path of precious jewels, and pearls just for you to walk upon.

Let me hear the divine melody of your flute, and my soul will leap with boundless joy!

Come and make your permanent home deep inside the core of my heart.

Mea mashooq havi na paan - Bashir Maraazi

The name "Maraazi" is derived from the poet's place of origin. Some of his famous songs include: Mea Mashooq Havi Na Paan, Roshe Wangun Khaar, Yaar Dowaen

Mea mashooq havi na paan,

Ba wandhas jaan latiye

Mea neu nam deen o emaan,

Ba wandhas jaan latiye

My beloved is not with me,

Yet I give my life for her.

I have neither faith nor religion,

Yet I give my life for her.

Ba karhas poshe warshun,

Hana ye na su mei kun

Gasem mushkil mea aasaan,

Ba wandhas jaan latiye

She blooms like flowers in spring,

But she does not know my pain.

Even in hardship, she makes it easy for me,

Yet I give my life for her

Agar wateth peyim yaad,

Banem naaras mea gulzar

Ratas nakh yeth ba daamaan,

Ba wandhas jaan latiye

If she remembers me even for a moment,

My garden blossoms like a bed of roses.

Her love is embedded in my soul,

Yet I give my life for her

My Charming beloved, This is the union

Kensi chai baraat yiwaan

Someone somewhere is being carried in baraat

Someone somewhere is being carried in funeral

Someone somewhere is lamenting as always

Someone somewhere is celebrating his mehendiraat

Sometimes I wish you to be here

Sometimes I am reciting love poems

Sometimes I recited pleas

Loal chusai loal baraan

Surah Ikhlaas paraan

Loal chaani chus be maraan

Doh’as gayam nyesef raat

I love you with compassion

Reciting Surah of sincerity

Here, I lay dying in your yearning

My days resemble midnights now

Zooni laggi chooni jaraan

Jaanbaaz lukh che wechaan

Even moon is being adorned now

Today or tomorrow we might have homes there

But Janbaaz, people are still looking

At their caste and creed

The bars in the city are empty since none provide as much intoxication as your eyes

To see you in the moonlight, I desire

My poems remain incomplete and with no result, lost in your memories

Posh mati dilbar mye travith - Ali Mohammad Shahbaaz

Posh’e-mati dilbar mye travith kot gasakh?

Yath dil’as armaan thavith kot gasakh?

My beloved of flowery countenance, after leaving me, where will you go?

Having aroused desires in my heart, where will you go?

Drakh yodd myaan’yav vataov thehrav kar

Loal raay’an aab travith kot gasakh?

If you’ve chosen my path, then bear it with patience.

After dousing the flames of love, where will you go?

Myani kanni chui baa’khuda poznai vanakh

Babri tann yithkaen sajaevith kot gasakh?

I implore you to speak the truth, for once

Bedazzled like this, where will you go?

Bulbul’an taamath vyes rovuth che hosh

Posh’e-chaman’an mushk’navith kot gasakh?

Even the birds are frenzied by your charm.

After scenting the garden, where will you go?

Vaalwaesh hyeth chukh patai jaanvar’an

Paech khamm zulfan banaevith kot gasakh?

Armed with snares, you are pursuing your preys

With these tangled tresses of yours, where will you go?

Shahbaaz’o loal vyetravun chu krooth

Yuth moll’uk sauda chukaevith kot gasakh?

Shahbaaz, to love is a weighty task

After bargaining for this deal, where will you go?

posh mati Dilbar may travith kot gasakh

Come, and I’ll adorn you with pearls

Come, my beloved spring has finally arrived

Chaeshme loosim mye pyaraan

Do you still adore yourself?

Beauty fades by morrow

Roshe wala myani dilbaro

Poshan bahaar aaw yuer walo

Come (to me), my upset beloved.

The spring of flowers has arrived; come hither.

Tang phuliya kya chi jaan

Harud waalaan darde saan

Bozi baagwaan maari paan

Poshan bahaar aaw yuer walo

How beautiful the pear trees look in full bloom.

If the gardener were to see this, he would die of grief.

The spring of flowers has arrived; come hither.

Czoonth fulya kya chi jaan

harud waalaan darde saan

Bozi baagwaan maari paan

Poshan bahaar aaw yuer walo

How beautiful the apple trees look in full bloom.

(But) the autumn arrives with deep sorrow

If the gardener were to see this, he would die of grief.

The spring of flowers has arrived; come hither.

Roz Roz Boz Mein - Mehjoor

Roz roz boz mein zaar madno

Daadiey chaaniey chas haa beymaar madno

Stay, O love, and hear my plaint!

Love-sick, I yearn for you.

Katche zoon gaejthas, safraes laejthas

Tchoundmakh gaame shahaar madno

You’ve made a full moon peak and pine

Seeking you over hill and dale.

Nazre chaaniey seeith, beymaar balaiey keeith

Myaane weeizi loguth be-aar madno

Eyes that ease the grief of many,

Failed me, Couldn’t wade me to the shores

Tche myon ghamkhaar, tche myon sitamgaar

Tche chauk, tche haa bulgaar madno

It’s you who heals, It’s you who wreaks

The wounds are yours, The wraps for sure

Yaar daud krooth pyaum, shuir paan zaaiye gaum

Tche patte rowum laukchaar madno

How hard to watch youth waste away

O, what price to pay for love!

Ishaar hawaan, dil katraawaan

Bhumbe chai tez talwaar madno

Through cues, you draw the arcs of pain

Brows you have that pierce me insane

Khoon gom jaari , aush haer haree

Fali fali gom mukhtahaar madno

My blood joins now with streams of tears

Like scattered necklace pearls I lie

Baghe yembarzal vaniposh ti maswal

Padan karay nishaar madno

Masval, yemberzal, pomegranate blossoms

I offer at your feet, my love

Wanihaa mahjoor daastaane dil zaroor

Wanas ti chui naa tas waar madno

I Mahjoor wish to recount the tales of sting

Something that nips and I fail to tell

Muchar darwaze mai-khanas subah fol

Barukh yem pyali wich bade sabah dol

Bakhili kar me yati chuna kansi rozon

Gasav chamah, mein hissi yitin akuy gol

Open the doors to the bar/tavern

Fill the goblets of wine, the morning is here

Life is short, lets’ make most of it

Drink and be merry, even if it is just one drink

Ganeemat sham-e gham, rozya na rozya

Temis zulfon yi kham, rozya na rozya

We are grateful even if it is an evening of sorrow and separation, who knows how long it will last.

We are grateful  for her curly locks of hair, who knows how long it will last

Cheyew vunkhan chu zahid bhambiromut

Khabar cha suboh dham rozya na rozya

Grab a drink, the devout are sleeping at the moment.

Who knows, whether we are alive tomorrow

Thakun sarmaye bas chum orzuv chon

Nazar akh chum karam, rozya na rozya

All I have as my assets are your blessings.

You  grace me, who knows how long it will last.

Bhe chus kafir karan chus bhut parasti

Achan tal chum sanam, rozya na rozya

I am a non-believer worshiping idols

I have my beloved in my eyes and heart, who knows how long it will last.

Dilich dubrai amitch wal-sanas cham

Khabar sazas yi sam, rozya na rozya

My heart is palpitating and has engulfed me. Who knows how long it will last.

Chi masti sakiyas mas malri baer-baer

Saki/Wine-bearer is fully intoxicated and having fun.

And my heart has turned into a wine goblet, who knows how long it will last.

Rom gayem sheehshass - Mirza Gulam Hassan Beg Arif

Rom gayem sheehshass

begour govaa baane meoun

Sakiyaa, waiyieth rateyaa jaanaan meoun

My glass has shattered and my vessel has lost its tune, will my beloved accept me despite my imperfections?

O Cupbearer (Saki), help me find/protect my beloved tonight

Aaminee khaasen, thaevoemas mas barieth

Tus chethus pey yawune mastaane myuen

Sakiyaa, waiyeth rateyaa jaanaan meoun

In a raw/unbaked cup, I kept wine filled to the brim. He drank from it, my intoxicated youthful beloved.

O Saki, help me find my beloved tonight.

Zaev kalayum aaech puten karnum Shahan

Mas be tas patae gayas paete jaanan moen

Sakiyaa, waiyeeth rateyaa jaanaan meoun

My tongue went still, my eyes grew small and dazed - my lord and I, like a bee, followed in the trail of my beloved.

O Saki, help me find my beloved tonight.

Ulfatech taelwaere karnum yaaer aaer

Chus wanen maenz kus wanes afsana myoen

Sakiyaa, waiyeeth rateyaa jaanaan meoun

With the sharp blade of love he cut me, made me bleed  and now, within this forest of words, who will carry my story to him? O Saki, help me find my beloved tonight.

Sakhiyav rutho - Arnimal

Sakhiyav ruthum hai ruthum hai gaseth, buthumai gamanai

Tathay vigunav dutham hai, bi chakh demeh na jaamnei

Oh friends, my beloved has become displeased; I am consumed by the sorrow of this separation.

Cruel fate has dealt me this blow; I will never forget this moment as long as I live.

Saendhe jallah tanah naav si, bei seer panuni bhaav si,

Kyazih leajthas pama nai bi cha demeh na jaamnei

You have cast my reputation into the burning fire; you have revealed my inner secrets to the world.

Why have you subjected me to such humiliation? I will never forget this as long as I live.

Baaleh paeth naadh layesai, Bei saaze seittaar wayesei

Shronay Shronay karas ronai damanai, bi chakh demeh na jaamnei

Standing upon the hilltops, I shall cry out for you; I will play my heart's melodies on the sitar.

My anklets/tears will make a rhythmic 'shronay' sound as I weep at your doorstep; I will never forget this [pain] as long as I live

Tarakh mandla dramutei, zoonei nadaes aamutae

Rovyei karo subai shaamnai, bi chakh demeh na jaamnei

The circle of stars has emerged in the sky; even the moon has come out in response to my calls.

I shall mourn [the loss of my beloved] from morning until evening; I will never forget this [sorrow] as long as I live.

Sanz kar koori - poet anonymous

A light-hearted fun song, which almost everyone thought was “Sangtar koori Sangtar koori” when young!

Sanz kar koori sanz kar koori, vaeruv chue gatchun

Traave koori khaanemaajer, daanas chue paevun
Oh my daddy, oh my daddy tate keh chum karun

Traave koori khaanemaajer daanas chue paevun

Daughter, prepare yourself; it is time to leave for your new home. Leave behind your childhood games, stop being pampered; you must now embrace a life of wisdom.
Oh father, what shall I do there? (How can I leave my home?)

Ye mei monghom ti mei duetmakh, toete ne khosh tim

Waen chum GP fund ti bonus tath te patai chim

Kuch bhi hoga O my daddy waqtas sut pakun

Traave koori khaanemaajer daanas chue paevun

Everything I asked for, you gave me; yet the in-laws are still not satisfied. Now I have my GP (General Provident) fund and my bonus; they even have their eyes on that!

Whatever happens, oh my daddy, one must move along with the times.

Leave your childhood play behind, daughter; it is time for you to embrace wisdom and responsibility.

Rishte daaran hamsayan chu azz karun saal

Akh baren yaed naate baate baye vannam jadaal

Take it easy O my daddy ath laegne sanun

Traave koori khaanemaajer daanas chue paevun

Today, we must host a grand feast for relatives and neighbors.

Some will fill their bellies with food, yet still find a reason to complain.

Take it easy, oh my daddy, don't let it stress you out.

Leave your childhood play behind, daughter; it is time for you to embrace wisdom and responsibility.

Shayad panen gonah khatim te chum vaene baasaan

Mei os koori khaab vuchmut naavid mas kasaan

I don’t care O my daddy ath chune patth rozun

Traave koori khaanemaajer daanas chue paevun

Perhaps all my past youthful mistakes are finally coming to an end.

Daughter, I had a dream of you as a little girl, watching your hair being cut (prepared) for your wedding.

Father, I don't care about the past anymore

Leave your childhood play behind, daughter

Shool seetan, khadag seetyan; Maej rachwien che bhaktein

Zaar sanyee, pennaw kanaw; Maej bozaan wenkenas

Armed with a trident and sword, Mother protects Her devotees. Hearing our desperate pleas with Her own ears, Mother is listening right now

Rang rang maej, tang hay aasay; Azz baesyom dokh mei chon

Paan pushreith, chey ha arpan; Maej genzraan wenkenas

O multi-formed Mother, I have been deeply distressed, but today I see my pain is Yours. Offering my body and soul entirely to You, Mother is accepting me as Her own right now

Warei-warei, saree yiwaan,; Dokh tei dyed maje bhawaan

Sar hay trawaan, kale paadan; Maej toothan wenkenas

One by one, everyone arrives, bringing their sorrows to Mother Bhawani. Bowing their heads at Her holy feet, Mother is showering Her divine love right now

Saakiya moy phir me paanan; Maej chawaan wenkenas

Karmic burdens and endless births leave me half-blinded, moment by moment. O Divine Cupbearer, turn Your gaze to me; Mother is pouring the wine of awakening right now

Komal posh, hyeth chu aamut; Azz hay aetham doh su yorr

Posh mott ha byel cher cheree; Maje lagaan wenkenas

Carrying delicate flowers, he has arrived on this sacred Ashtami day. Intoxicated with love, Posh Mout scatters holy leaves, offering them to the Mother right now

Tamanna Chaney - Mehjoor

Tamanna chaani deedaruk

Mai Chum yemberzale bumbroo

Phojis yanmath Lejis vichhnai

Gajis chaani kaley bumbroo

Beloved how I yearn for your sight

Like the yemberzal flower for her bee

These eyes have always ached for you

Ever since I bloomed

Ye kadd chon zann chu poshe kul

Phulay Barjeste chas bilkul

You blossomed like a graceful tree

All abloom with bright hued flowers

Vecheth sonbul te range gul

Yeh dil maa tambale bumbroo

The sight of the myriad blooms

They nurse my longings

Phojis yanmath Lejis vichhnai

Gajis chaani kaley bumbroo

These eyes have always ached for you

Ever since I bloomed

Vesiye su gulfam yadaam yadaam -  Mahmud Gami

Vesiye su gulfam yadaam yadaam

Khoshrow khoshandaam yadaam yadaam

O friend, that flower-like beauty is in my memory, I remember.

That beautiful face and graceful figure, I remember, I remember

Az yaad dith yem kernas faraamosh

Az subuh ta shaam, az subuh ta shaam

You promised (and then) forgot.

From morning till night

Shahabad achhwal roozum temsinz kal

Lolaab sogaam, lolaab sogaam

At Shahabad and Achabal, my thoughts were only of them.

In the valleys of Lolab and Sogam, [I remember them]

Darhen dareechan baladarhen peth

Darkhaan barbaam, darkhan barbaam

On windows and pavilions.

The maker's chisel fell in love

Yaamath rasa sinz welzaar boozim

Yaqbaar kehntaam, yaqbaar kehntaam

Until the sweet voice or melody is heard.

Again and again.

Veseye sui gulfam yadaam yadaam

Wafadar mouji - Anjan Kashmiri

Che houv kanh wochum nai, wafadar mouji

Mein nish chaien, chhaie lavee samsaar mouji

I saw no one else like you, my faithful mother,

Without you, my world is nothing, my mother

Che chhak noor majlis andar swarg hoora

Modur mout khand choun guftaar maeji

You shine like divine light among heavenly beings,

Sweeter than honey is your gentle speech, my mother

Wandai sar che padan thav ghosh nadan

Chakai posh foithe foithe halam daar mouji

Upon the snowy peaks your echoes resound,

Like blossoming flowers, your fragrance spreads everywhere, my mother

Balan dedh lad dil cheanis barastal

Chokan chon muhabat bulgaar mouji

Since childhood, your love has guarded my heart,

The fire of your affection still burns within me, my mother

Che lajith dohay shoob fani sarayas

Karith peadi avloya avatar mouji

You bore hardship and the struggles of this fleeting world,

Like a guiding star you took every incarnation, my mother

Tamanna choni anjanas dilas

Su chhu chani loluk talabgaar mouji

The desires of your heart rest in hidden sorrows,

Yet your soul is filled with yearning for love, my mother

Temis kyaa chu parvah yemis raez che aasaekh

Diwaan dai temis paan deedar mouji

What does he care, the one who has your prayers behind him?

For he has the vision of your face in his court of fortune, my mother

Ghar andar chhu jannat, yemberzal poshan

Teli kyazi raavan baagh-o-bahaar mouji

Within the home lies paradise, like blooming spring flowers,

Why would one seek gardens elsewhere, with you, my mother

wafadaar maeji

Walai kasturiye / Chon pakanoi parzanovmay- Rasul Mir

Chon pakanoi parzanovmay duriye

Walay kosturiye par mai trav neeriye

l have recognized your gait from afar

Come, my love, do not stroll around idly

Subhas wathithay cheer draykhay kathas

Badnam korthas khanabal kis ghathas

Katha nar zalith kar goviye sooriye

Walay kosturiye par mai trav neeriye

After rising early, you’re late in gathering wood,

And this gave me a bad name at Khanabal ghat

The wood burnt, the fire turned it into ashes

Come, my love, do not stroll around idly.

Kot Khat ashak chon wuchhney hiyi pan,

mat gay bulbul soz chonuy bozan.

Tot nar ashkum pyokh zan lavi mooriye,

Walay kosturiye par mai trav neeriye

To great lengths the admirers have gone to see you,

The bulbuls have gone insane, hearing your melody,

As if the embers have fallen on dry, tender wood.

Come, my love, do not stroll around idly.

Ver nagay neryé ba agiye,

Achhaval ki posh sharey lagiye.

Grayi  marann kot gachhakh kan duriye,

Walay kosturiye par mai trav neeriye

I will leave Verinag early to attend to you

And adorn you with showers from Acchhabal.

Swaying, where are you going my love?

Come, my love, do not stroll around idly.

Hiyi panas mol thovye zatan,

kot chhakh gachhan wananay jahatam

yor yikhna lol chhum chon mooriye,

Walay kosturiye par mai trav neeriye

Almighty has made your jasmine body priceless.

Where are you heading, let us know.

Won’t you come to me? I long for you,

Come, my love. do not stroll around idly.

Navi namas peth ham ta khor chhakh vayan,

Yim nay ashkan tiri michgan layan.

Ham goy abas nam rathatay yuriye,

Walay kosturiye par mai trav neeriye

At the end of the boat, revving with an oar,

You are casting arrows at your admirers.

You’re losing time in the water, come to this bank.

Come my love, do not stroll around idly.

Ath Mattan wudre haka san chhakh khasan

tikka dar qasabas grayi chhakhay maran

konkul mastras mokhta shubiye juriye

Walay kosturiye par mai trav neeriye

Walking briskly in the saffron fields

You are swaying your ornamented head dress.

Your curly hair deserves pearls in pairs.

Come, my love, do not stroll around idly

Chhay desshiith Raul Miran zanikhay

qad sanobar sarobala manikhay

day yeli di tai dekha panumuy puriye

Walay kosturiye par mai trav neeriye

Rasul Mir (poet) has recognized you by the shadow

Looking elegant like the height of a pine tree.

Lucky favours those on whom God bestows it.

Come, my love, do not stroll around the idly

Ya Tuli Khanjar Maarey - Abdul Ahad Nazim

English translation courtesy: Avtar Mota at Chinar Shade blog

Ya tuli khanjar maarey

Nataa saanie shabaa rozay

Yim zaar vanahuss bardaar

Karsana su yaar bozay

Either draw your dagger and strike me dead

Or else let our night together remain.

These cries of anguish I send into the wilderness

May my beloved somehow hear them

Bulbul chhu behiit ba gul

Mushtaq gomut chhu bilkul

Nai rozi gul nai bulbul

Azz ashq kathaa rozey

The nightingale sits beside the rose,

Completely consumed with longing.

Neither the rose will remain, nor the nightingale

Today only the story of love endures

Maashooq kyah goyee keenaai

Aatash mein borthhum seenai

Aashiq chhu kammi taam deenai

Maarun ravaa rozey

What did my beloved say, with such spite and cruelty

I set fire to my own chest.

The lover deserves nothing but loss and ruin

It is fitting, then, that he should die

Muss deutnum kalwaalan

Chhiv raavnus aik pyaalun

Chhum doori ruzith zaalan

Karsanaa dawaa sozey

She handed me over to the tavern keeper

Had one cup sent to me.

I am left burning in separation

What remedy will cure this?

Kyaa goas malaal roothum

Sreh adnuk yaar muthum

Kath dard na`iye beuthum

Karsana paigaam soazey

What grief it was when she turned away in anger

I lost a beloved closer than my own breath.

I sit with a pain beyond all words

How do I send word to her now?

Bihith chu khalvakh khaanas

Mushtaakh chu paanpaanas

Aashakh chu manz vaeraanas

Maashokh tanha rozze

She sits in solitude in her chamber,

Longing for her own self alone.

Love wanders lost in the wilderness

The beloved remains alone.

Maashooq kaerthhum sitam

Naazim chhu praraan yittam

Chhus tashnaa deedar dittam

Pagaah na yi dam rozey

The beloved has inflicted such cruelty upon me

Nazim is burning, consumed entirely.

He is thirsty - give him just one glimpse

By tomorrow, not a breath may remain

Yeli jaanaan ralem - Asad Mir

Yeli jaanaan ralem,

Ade balem dil baemaaro

Daag jigras czalem,

Ade balem dil baemaaro

When I meet my beloved

My ailing heart will come alive again

Bruises carved on it will go

My ailing heart will come alive again

Kael yeli toote kalem,

Zael panjras gasi lurpaaro

Hess Hoosh rang mea dalem

Ade balem dil baemaaro

Someday, I will lose my speech

Cage around me will fall apart

I will lose all my senses and sheen

My ailing heart will come alive again

Aab e zam zam chalem

Asad meeras dil e gumaano

Rehmatek jaame walem

Ade balem dil baemaaro

Zamzam water will purify me

Asad Mir has this surmise

He will decorate me with the graceful attire

My ailing heart will come alive again

Zamanay pok ne hamdam - Ghulam Nabi Doolwal

Zamanay pok ne hamdam toti kya gaw

Temis gei zulf barham toti kya gaw

What can I say about this era, my companion?

What can I say about the dark, tangled locks that scatter chaos?

Mubarakh Zahida janath che ạ̄sin

Me yodway shahr-i-jahnam toti kya gaw

Congratulations, Zahida, you’ve reached paradise,

But what can I say about the city of hell that I was granted?

Gatshi nay saaf dil ditü lāfü saasa

Nạṭyaw chyatü ab-i-zamzam toti kya gaw

If the heart is not pure, words are mere breath,

What can I say about the holy Zamzam water that couldn’t quench my thirst?

Lekhith Iblis suy azlay chhe lanath

Nyạbür' yot draw Adam toti kya gaw

Iblis (Satan) wrote his fate with his own hands and been cursed

What can I say about Adam, who was drawn into the same trap?

Agar nay jazbā-ē-īsār āsi

Dọhas partü ism-i-azam toti kya gaw

If there is no spirit of sacrifice,

What can I say about chanting the greatest name in vain?

Bü shartas pyaṭh gazal az bozünawath

Che nay sazas me dikh sam toti kya gaw

Without any conditions, I will sing a ghazal for you,

What can I say if you don’t accompany my tunes?

Nazar Asrar senz chei jaan baazas

Che nei roozakh me hamdam toti kya gaw

Jaanbaz (poet) has the sight for the secrets

What can I say,  if you won't be my companion?

Zamanai Pouk Ne Hamdam

Zinda Rozna Bapat - Rahman Rahi

Zinda rozna bapat chii maran lukh, chii marakh naa

Lotpeth chekha pyala kyoho, uff ti karakh naa

To live, people die: won’t you die;

Will you drink this cup of poison in silence, won’t you even cry?

Na chu daari alaan pardi ti,

na chu brandi dazaan chong

Bawas chu, wanan kaw chii, moluum karakh naa

Neither the window curtains move, nor are there any lights (lamps) on

The crow is requesting the wind to see why it is so

Tati labhi chi khasaan, naar bhubar,

previ chi wasaan sheen

Hay pardi chechi myoon kruhun, gaam karakh naa

Fiery flames are climbing the hot barrier/wall, and snow is falling too.

Oh my veil has faded black, head to the village

Zarum ne Doorer - Bashir Dada

English Translation provided by bashirdada.blogspot.com

Zarum ne doorer, Khuda gawah chum

Kanyen te Baalann mye paan choawum

Mye paein Paanai, Yi Zakhm koorum

Gahey mye Paanai yi Zakhm soawum

I could not bear estrangement - the Almighty will testify for me,

Dashed myself against rocks and mighty cliffs in my misery,

Sometimes I exacerbated this oozing wound mercilessly,

And sometimes I cajoled myself to sleep – its perpetual agony!

Mashaan Mashaan gayi Mashid mye saeree

Magar Mashun chum Muhaal choani

Yi paane Mashraf Gomut mye oasum

Su kem sanaa Azz mye yaad poawum

Forgetting, oblivious I forgot the entire world entirely,

But to vanquish your memory is entirely beyond me,

I had forgotten all about me, oblivious to myself entirely,

Who was it that caused me today again to remember me?

Wadaan Wadaan Prucsh mye poshe bhaghow

Su Yaar kati chui Che kyazi Tanhaa

Mye Hard waawan dilas dyutnam

Yuthui yi haal e Jigar mye bhoawum

Weeping, lamenting the flower meadows enquired of me:

Where is your beloved, why do you trudge alone, solitary?

The autumn tempest consoled and placated me,

As I emptied the heart of its burden of misery!!

Khodaayi boozin Che aayi hurinai

Nazar Che myani Balaayi Laginai

Che Zindagi kya Tajee bana win

Mye Chaani baapath Jahaan troawum

May your life be bestowed with longevity!

May my sight be sacrificed on you!!

How well have you adorned your life, astutely!

I – the naïve one for you forsook everything completely!

Mye koot cshoalum Mohabbatas manz

Su Haal panunui Kaleje Zaanyam

Haraaratas manz Sharaaratas manz

Che teer loyuth mye seene doarum.

What a great deal have I borne in love silently!

My heart is conversant with that state entirely!

In a blazing temper, prompted by your temper fiery,

You flung an arrow; I bore it on my heart gaily!
